The urge to merge has long been present in an aviation industry blighted by over-capacity and rising fuel costs. But it is the economic downturn that has truly cleared the way for consolidation between carriers. In European terms, BA and Iberia are late to the merger party. But this is a party that CFW does not see finishing anytime soon. Carriers are struggling to hold their own in a turbulent market which has seen a number of smaller carriers to go to the wall. For the survivors the policy is simple: safety in numbers.
