Now that blu-ray discs have come out the winner against the HD-DVD format flogged by Toshiba, as the next thing in optical disc drives, Japan's Sharp and Pioneer announced on April 9 that they would set up a joint venture (JV) to merge their optical disc businesses to establish a leading position in the Blu-ray market. The JV, which aims to start operating in October, will develop, produce and sell optical disc drives, recorders and players. The move will allow the two companies to combine their management resources in the optical disc business.
