In a move that may herald the start of a trend of local consolidation, Pakistani pharmaceutical companies Sami Pharmaceuticals and Hilton Pharma have announced an agreement to merge. The deal is particularly significant as this is the first time that two local companies ranked in the top ten have merged. There are approximately 400 drugmakers in Pakistan and most are small scale compared to other generic drug manufacturers around the world, mainly because the majority of the country's 173mn population cannot afford pharmaceuticals.
