Since taking office in February of this year, South Korean President Lee Myung Bak's government has been talking about broad-based privatisation. We are, however, still waiting for the country to kick off the privatisation of some of its 319 state-owned companies. In late July, the government removed the electricity, gas, water and medical insurance sectors from the group to be sold due to concerns about rising charges, as well as his dwindling political popularity.
