Malaysia's Maybank has been executing a strategy of regional expansion over the last few months. It spent US$835mn to acquire Vietnam's An Binh Bank and Pakistan's MCB Bank in May, and bid for a majority stake in Bank Internasional Indonesia (BII). While the other deals are going ahead, its plan to acquire a 56% stake in Bank Internasional Indonesia (BII) for US$2.7bn, an offer which was accepted in March by stakeholder Temasek, has been placed in limbo due to a new Indonesian takeover law.
