At the end of June, CFW covered the successful US$6.07bn bid by US firm Republic Services for rival Allied Waste in a move which would, among other things, have created a serious rival to market leader Waste Management. Now Waste Management has turned the tables by proposing a full acquisition of Republic Services for US$34.00 per share in cash, in an attempt to trash the merger of its two competitors. The US$6.19bn offer represents a 22% premium on the closing price of Republic stock on July 11.
