The US's largest pork producer, Smithfield Foods, has made a significant step in its efforts to expand outside the US. On June 30 it announced that state-owned COFCO Limited, China's largest national agriculture trading and processing company, will acquire a 4.95% stake in the company, granting Smithfield access to the enormous Chinese market.
