German telecoms incumbent Deutsche Telekom is reported to be considering a bid for troubled US mobile operator Sprint Nextel, following rumours that the Nextel unit of the company is to be spun off. Deutsche Telekom is already present in the US mobile market through its mobile arm, T-Mobile International, which is currently the third largest operator in the market. Meanwhile, Sprint is an established operator with a market share of 21.2%, compared with T-Mobile's 11.3%, but the company has been struggling to maintain its share. A combination of the two operators would create the largest mobile operator in the US, with more than 82.5mn subscribers.
