The privatisation of the Compagnie Malienne du Développement des Textiles (CMDT), Mali's national cotton company, is underway after years of delay. On April 25 allAfrica.com reported that bids for tender have just been sent out. The World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) have been encouraging the privatisation of CMDT since the late 1990s. In conjunction with this, the government implemented large reforms throughout the 1990s, including the privatisation of 16 companies and the partial privatisation of another 12. CMDT and the Societé de Telecommunications du Mali (SOTELMA) are scheduled to occur in 2008.
