Trading in the shares of Chile's largest grocery retailer D&S was suspended on March 10 2008 after rumours emerged that the firm was in takeover talks with US retail giant Wal-Mart. A report in local newspaper El Mercurio suggested that the US firm was eyeing D&S as a possible acquisition target as part of its strategy to strengthen its position in Latin America. Trading in the firm's shares resumed after D&S issued a press release denying that the two firms were holding talks.
