New Windows For Nokia, But Can The House Stay Standing?
February 2011 | Corporate Financing AnalysisNokia, the world's largest mobile handset manufacturer, is teaming up with software leader Microsoft to jointly develop a new global mobile ecosystem that will sideline Nokia's proprietary smartphone operating system (OS) in favour of the Windows Phone platform. The company has also instituted a wide-ranging reorganisation of its management structure and introduced a more clearly defined distinction between its high-end, premium smartphone business and its low-end basic handset portfolio. However, while CFW believes the partnership is in many ways a good fit, it is more beneficial to Microsoft than to Nokia, which may well have been better advised to consider adopting the rival Android platform to ensure its long-term survival.
