Viettel Interest in Haiti Telecoms Market

State-run fixed-line operator Telecommunications d'Haiti (Teleco) has attracted a bid for 70% of its equity to be acquired by Vietnam's Viettel Corporation for US$59mn. The latter, owned by the Vietnamese military, has experience as a GSM mobile operator in its home country, accounting for around 35mn subscribers in August 2009. The operator also has experience in the fixed-line and broadband sectors, giving it a good technical background to support Haiti's struggling incumbent.
