Trans-Pacific Airline Deal Pre-Empts 'Open Skies' Accord

A bidding war is looming in the skies above Japan. Two market rivals, American Airlines' parent company AMR - and Delta Air Lines, are closing in on an investment in debt-laden Japanese carrier Japan Air (JAL), in a move that is set to provide one of the US airlines with increased access to the Asian market. Importantly any deal struck will provide the investor, and the airline alliance to which they belong, with access to Haneda, the world's fourth largest airport by passenger numbers.
