Private Equity Eyes Opportunities In African Housing
August 2009 | Private Equity News AlertA US-based private equity fund has announced plans to double its investment in the South African housing market by year end, as part of its search for new opportunities across Africa arising from the economic downturn. International Housing Solutions (IHS) targets lower to middle-income earners, giving money directly to private developers that allows them to access to bigger bank loans at a reduced cost of borrowing. It invests in housing development projects and housing sector companies that primarily serve the approximately five million South African households whose income is too high to qualify for public housing programs, yet too low to afford most market-rate housing.
