Healthcare Boom Not Out Of Steam Yet

The news on May 20 that Multinational Pharma giant Novartis would spend US$1.2bn acquiring the Speciality Generic Injectables Business of EBEWE Pharma marked the latest major buyout in a sector that has already had a blockbuster year, and CFW believes that the deals are showing no signs of slowing down yet. Data from Dealogic shows that the move by Novartis represents the seventh US$1bn+ deal in the sector this year, making healthcare the second most targeted industry globally in 2009 year to date after the finance sector. Indeed, the value of deal activity in the sector, and the type of deals that have produced it, has fully borne out our prediction in late 2008 of a raft of acquisitions by the big names of the sector through 2009 (See 'Big Pharma Acquisitions To Gain Momentum', CFW¸ December 19 2008).
