Kyivstar/VimpelCom Merger Could Halt Alfa/Telenor Squabbles

There is speculation that Russia's Alfa Group has suggested to Norway's Telenor that the two companies unite their subsidiaries Kyivstar and VimpelCom, in a move which CFW believes would go a long way to ameliorating Alfa and Telenor's relationship. Telenor and Alfa both hold stakes in Russia's second largest mobile operator VimpelCom and Ukraine's largest mobile operator Kyivstar. VimpelCom is present throughout the CIS and in 2005 acquired a small Ukrainian mobile operator Ukrainian Radio Systems (URS), which had a market share of around 3.6% at the end of 2008.
