Sanofi To Become Generics Lead In Latin America
April 2009 | M&A News AlertIn a move that further underlines CFW's view that as the 2011 patent cliff approaches patented pharmaceutical manufacturers would move to strengthen their generic capacity in emerging markets, France's Sanofi-Aventis confirmed that it planned to buy Brazilian drugmaker Medley. The deal values the company at EUR500mn (US$666mn) and will make Sanofi the top generics manufacturer in Latin America. Medley is Brazil's third-largest drugmaker and the top maker of generic drugs with 127 generics in its portfolio and EUR153mn in generic sales last year. Generics sales make up 68% of its revenue and it boasts 17 of the 20 top-selling generics in Brazil, a market which has seen a growth in demand of 20% a year.
