MTN's Diversification Highlights Scope For M&A

With South Africa's Competition Tribunal due to begin hearings into MTN's proposed acquisition of the mobile retail distributor iTalk and its ZAR1.5bn (US$162mn) purchase of Verizon's South African data business, CFW believes that 2009 looks set to be a period of increased consolidation in the South African telecoms market. Even as smaller operators struggle for credit amid a worsening financial and macroeconomic backdrop, something which will inevitably produce acquisition targets, larger telecoms operators are still seeking to broaden their bases and strengthen their positions.
