France Telecom In The Race For Africa

France Télécom has acquired 53% of the still-inactive Ugandan mobile network operator HITS Telecom. France Télécom will now be the majority shareholder in a new joint venture called Orange Uganda, and will provide half the US$200mn investment planned over the next three years, in order to complete the network rollout begun by HITS. It is hoped that commercial services will be launched next year. Uganda is a competitive mobile market with four active mobile operators and more on the way. It is a good acquisition for France Télécom, however, as the market has high potential.
