Consolidation On The Horizon In SA's Platinum Sector

September 2008 | M&A News Alert

Impala Platinum, South Africa's second-largest platinum producer, has entered into talks with industry peers Mvelaphanda Resources (Mvela) and Northam Platinum, it was announced on September 12. If the talks turn into a takeover, the deal will be the third-largest M&A transaction in South Africa to date. The three companies' combined market capitalisation of ZAR147.5bn (US$18.08bn) would put them just behind the 2001 merger between Billiton and Australian miner BHP, which was valued at ZAR223bn, and the buyout of De Beers minorities by Anglo American, CHL, and Debswana for ZAR153.7bn in the same year.
