Russian Metals M&A Heats Up

Mikhail Prokhorov, the former chairman of Norilsk Nickel, the world's largest producer of nickel and palladium, and the current chairman of Polyus Gold, Russia's largest gold producer, has added fuel to the constant speculation over current M&A activity in the Russian metals industry. Speaking at the St Petersburg Economic Forum, he said that a merger between Norilsk Nickel and United Company RUSAL is 'inevitable'. Despite the size of the companies involved, he maintained that 'the global trend is toward strengthening even such companies as Norilsk Nickel and RUSAL'.
