Aussie Samurai Bond Issuance

March 2008 | Corporate Financing News Alert

Issuance of Samurai bonds, Japanese yen instruments issued by overseas entities, has hit a record high in the FY2007/08 (April to March). Samurais gained attractiveness last year when Japan was not hit as hard as the US in the global credit crisis, which led to a lower interest rate differential between the US and Japan, as well as yen appreciation. The high issuance has also been fuelled by Japanese investors who prefer the higher returns samurais offer over government and corporate bonds. With all of these factors combined, samurais have become an increasingly used fund-raising method for overseas firms.
