Asahi Needs To Ramp Up EM PushMay 2012 | Corporate Financing Analysis
Recent reports have suggested that Japanese brewer Asahi Breweries is closing in on an acquisition of domestic soft drinks producer Calpis from Japanese food producer Ajinomoto for US$1.2bn. Should Asahi successfully acquire Calpis, this would make the Japanese brewer the third-largest non-alcoholic drinks producer in Japan by boosting its share of the soft drinks market to 12.4%. Given Asahi's acquisition history and its recent links to Calpis, we continue to hold reservations about its growth strategy and stress that it would need to get more aggressive in emerging market (EM) expansions to secure its future prospects.
