PLDT-Digitel Deal Approval, Conditions Mildly Dent PLDT's Dominance

The Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT) announced on October 26 that it has completed the acquisition of a majority interest in Digital Telecommunications Philippines (Digitel) in a share swap transaction valued at about PHP69.2bn (US$1.6bn). CFW had expected the deal to receive regulatory approval even though it took the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) seven months to reach the decision, which was unsurprising given the drastic change in the Philippines's telecoms industry.
