Telefónica Disputes Claro-ICE Deal

Telefónica has filed a complaint with regulator Sutel over alleged monopolistic practices of operators Claro and Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE). Telefónica has objected to the agreement between Claro and ICE over interconnection fees 'in defence of the consumer', arguing that the fees are against free competition in the marketplace. This follows a similar complaint lodged by Claro against Telefónica in August, and BMI believes the move is in retaliation to this preliminary complaint. While BMI believes improvements in competition bode well for Costa Ricans, and we welcome the encouragement of fair practice in the country, we remain concerned that the growing dominance of Telefónica and América Móvil in the Latin American region will have detrimental effects in the long run.
