Consolidation Underway, But Gloomy WiMAX Outlook Remains
September 2011 | Corporate Financing AnalysisThe first merger in Taiwan's WiMAX industry looks set to take place after Vee TIME filed a statement with the Taiwan Stock Exchange on September 24 stating that the WiMAX operator plans to fully acquire rival provider VMAX Telecom for TWD1.45bn (US$48mn). Consolidation has been seen as a means to boost the Taiwanese WiMAX sector's long-term outlook, and BMI agrees that the situation looks slightly brighter given that Vee Telecom could become the first provider to have nationwide network coverage. However, we remain unconvinced that WiMAX would become a leading mobile broadband technology given the increasing support for LTE.
